Logo Design Lehi UT

When you bring your car to a mechanic with a specific problem, you wouldn't expect to pay the mechanic in advance only to have the car returned without solving the problem! The same applies to logo design: when you hire a design firm, if they are limiting the number of designs they will create, they are basically saying "we may not solve the problem to your satisfaction, but we will still charge you."

1. How many designs will I receive?

The answer to the question should be "As many as it takes to achieve the goal." When you bring your car to a mechanic with a specific problem, you wouldn't expect to pay the mechanic in advance only to have the car returned without solving the problem! The same applies to logo design: when you hire a design firm, if they are limiting the number of designs they will create, they are basically saying "we may not solve the problem to your satisfaction, but we will still charge you." You should also be certain you are allowed to revise the design as many times as necessary.

2. How many designers will work on my design?

Whether you're spending $500 or $5000 you should always request that at least 3 designers are creating designs. The simple, obvious answer is different designers equals more unique designs. If you give 10 designers the same project, you will get 10 entirely unique and different designs. Who knows what creative minds will develop?

3. Do you have related examples?

If you're looking for a logo with a specific style or illustration, the design firm should be able to provide you with an example of such. Be sure to qualify the design firm by asking to see such examples that would be in-line with an identity you are trying to achieve.

4. Will the logo work in black and white?

Ahhh. The "cat got your tongue" question. Many design firms will not or can not answer this question. Why? Because (A) they have not considered it, and (B) since many modern designers rely on trendy computer effects or multiple colors to "wow" their clients, they are simply unable to create a truly succesful design that will work on all platforms. Consider that before the advent of computers, designers relied on their talent and creativity to create designs that stand the test of time: Coca Cola®, BMW®, Nike® and Time/Warner® to name a few. If you're logo doesn't work in black and white, it is already dated.

5. Do I own the artwork rights?

This seemingly harmless question can create many headaches. Besides the implications of legal battles, you do not want to be forever tied to the design firm that creates your logo. You absolutely should insist that you will own the final design outright and you will receive the artwork in its original format (most likely Adobe Illustrator). Furthermore, your ownership guarantees you can use the logo as you like and, more importantly, modify the artwork in the future if you choose. Of course, this ownership issue does not apply to any of the designs/concepts that were created and rejected, but only to the final design that is paid for in full.
